National Grammar Day
On National Grammar Day let's promote great grammar by reminding ourselves of what grammar is.


Grammar is the way we arrange words to make proper sentences.


Word level grammar covers verbs and tenses, nouns, adverbs etc.


Sentence level grammar covers phrases, clauses, reported speech etc.


Grammar List:


Adjective - a describing word of a noun.

e.g. She wore a beautiful dress. / He wore a red cap.


Adverb - describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb, often ends in ly.

e.g. The boy plays the drums loudly.


Coordinating Conjunctions - conjunctions are joining words that link together parts of a sentence. The three main coordinating conjunctions are 'and', 'but' and 'or'. They can be used to join together two clauses in a sentence.

e.g. I don't want to throw away my sweets, nor do I want to listen to my mum.


Metaphor - a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it not literally applicable.

e.g. She is an angel.


Noun - a noun refers to a thing.

e.g. A book.


Preposition - a word governing, and usually preceding, a noun or pronoun.

e.g. She arrived after dinner.


Pronoun - a word that substitutes for a noun or noun phrase so you don't keep repeating the word.

e.g. I, me, we, they, you, he, she, it, yours, himself, ourselves, its, my, that, this, those, us, who.


Proper Noun - a name used for a person, place, or organisation, spelled with an initial capital letter.

e.g. Jane, London, Oxfam.


Simile - a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind using words such as 'like', 'as', or 'than'.

e.g. He was as brave as a lion. / Her cheeks are red like a rose.


Subjunctive - the subjective is a verb form or mood used to express things that could or should happen. It is used to express wishes, hopes, commands, demands or suggestions.

e.g. If I were you I would accept the cake. / I suggest you take a coat.


Verbs - a doing word or action.

e.g. Jon is throwing the football. / Harry was running fast.
