Division

Division

A method to solve division problems is called 'short hand division', for example:

To divide '426 ÷ 2'

The calculation is arranged within a division bracket:

short-hand-division

We then work out how many times 2 goes into each digit, starting at the right and putting each answer on the top line:

short-hand-division-II

Therefore, 426 ÷ 2 = 213

When the numbers do not divide exactly they will need to be carried over, for example:

To divide '3575 ÷ 5'

short-hand-division-III

The 5 will not go into 3, so we carry the 3.

5 into 35 goes 7 times exactly, so nothing is carried

5 into 7 goes once with 2 remainder

5 into 25 goes 5 times exactly

Therefore, 3575 ÷ 5 = 715
