Addition

Addition

In column addition numbers are arranged in columns and may be borrowed from one column to another during addition, for example:

To add '4537 + 1275'

column-addition

Starting with the units column 7 + 5 = 12. This means that 2 goes into the units column and 1 is carried into the tens column.

Next, we add the tens column. 3 + 7 plus the carried 1 makes 11. This means 1 goes into the tens column and the other 1 is carried to the hundreds.

Next, we add the hundreds column. 5 + 2 plus the carried 1 makes 8. This means nothing is carried over and 8 goes into the hundreds column.

Lastly, we add the thousands column. 4 + 1 = 5.

Therefore the answer is 5812.
