Area & Perimeter

Area

The area is the amount of space a 2D shape covers.

Units of area include square centimetres (cm2) and square metres (m2).

Area of a rectangle

Area = length x width

A = l x w

Area of a triangle

Area = 1/2 x base x perpendicular height

A = 1/2 x b x h

Area of a trapezium

Area = 1/2 x (sum of parallel sides) x perpendicular height between sides

A = 1/2 x (a + b) x h

Area of a parallelogram

Area = base x perpendicular height

A = b x h

Perimeter

The perimeter is the distance around the outside edge of a shape.

To work out the perimeter of a shape add the length of each edge together, the total is the perimeter of the shape.

For example:

perimeter
Perimeter = 3 + 5.5 + 3.5 + 5 = 17 cm
