Certainly taking the English Tests on the site will help improve grammar but that alone will not be enough.
11 Plus Academia have many tests with a variety of questions covering all areas in grammar. Repetition using online tests will give exposure to the types of questions that the child will get in entrance exams and that exposure re-enforces the learning from the test. Each test allows 10 attempts over a 14 day period.
We are currently building a library of free resources in all subjects which we plan to release in during June but we think any site that advertises it is the one stop shop for 11 Plus exams is misleading.
11 Plus exams need commitment from the child, the tutor and the parents/carers, an ex-tutor used to describe it as the ‘Golden Triangle’, without the full commitment from all then the child’s task will be considerably harder.
One of the questions we have found that many tutors ask is 'Where does your child need improvement?' the 11 Plus Academia tests provide the detail for you to answer this.
As well as taking our English tests, which test and provide feedback for where improvement is required, and having a tutor, we recommend bringing grammar improvements into everyday life.
Read with your child every day. It is important to read with them to ensure that they are engaged with the story; can work out difficult words; read with expression; can follow the plot; can understand the characters; improve their vocabulary and explain the big lessons and themes of the story.
Reading regularly will give your child exposure to different literary devices such as metaphors, similes, alliteration, etc. which they will need to be able to identify and use in English tests.
A useful tool when discovering new words is to have a small notebook where you child can write down new words, their meaning, and also note synonyms and antonyms.
When writing and in everyday conversation encourage your child not to use naked nouns (for example don’t say door, say open door; brown door; old door; rotting door) and to avoid using key stage 1 words such as got, get, looked, look, looking, saw, see, seen, ran, run, running, walk, walked, walking, said ,nice, went, happy, sad, then, and suddenly.
