Book Review – The Borrowers
The Borrowers by Mary Norton is a delightful children's novel that has enchanted readers of all ages for decades. The book follows the story of a family of tiny people, known as the Borrowers, who live beneath the floorboards of a human family's house. The Borrowers survive by "borrowing" small items from the “human beans” and adapting them to suit their needs, as they are too small to create their own tools and materials.
The novel's main character is a young Borrower named Arrietty, who longs to explore the world beyond her family's home. Arrietty's curiosity leads her to meet a young human boy who is visiting the house for the summer. Arrietty and the boy form an unlikely friendship, and their interactions provide a fascinating insight into the differences between the Borrowers and humans.
One of the strengths of "The Borrowers" is the intricate world-building that Mary Norton has created. She has crafted a rich and detailed world, full of tiny objects and clever adaptations, that will capture the imagination of readers. Norton's writing is also evocative and atmospheric, capturing the wonder and mystery of the Borrowers' world.
The characters in "The Borrowers" are also memorable and endearing. Arrietty is a plucky and adventurous protagonist who is easy to root for, and her family members are all distinct and interesting. The human boy, is also a charming character who serves as a nice contrast to the Borrowers.
The Borrowers is a timeless classic that is sure to delight readers of all ages. It's a well-written, engaging, and imaginative book that will transport you to a world of tiny creatures living right under our noses. If you're looking for a charming and whimsical read, "The Borrowers" is the perfect choice.
I am so glad that Poppy read this book as it came up in the grammar school test that she sat in 2022. Poppy was successful and now attends the best co-educational grammar school in London. A good read!
