A Reading List for the 11 Plus English Exam

One of the best ways for your child to prepare for an 11 Plus English exam is to read.

Children should read a broad range of texts and ideally you should read with your child every day.

It is important to read with them as you can question them on the text to help ensure:

  • They are engaged with the story
  • Can work out difficult words
  • Read with expression
  • Can follow the plot
  • Can understand the characters and their traits
  • Improve their vocabulary
  • Explain the big lessons and themes of the story.

Reading regularly will give your child exposure to different literary devices such as metaphors, similes, alliteration, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia. They will need to be able to identify literary devices and use them in an 11 Plus English exam.

A useful tool when discovering new words is to have a small notebook where you child can write down new words, their meaning, and also note synonyms and antonyms.

The 11 Plus Academia Reading List is a mixture of books from classic to modern designed to create a love of reading as well as well as meeting the expectation of books that will be set in selective school exam testing.

If you have a few moments read these short book reviews from 11 year old Poppy and Harry on their favourite books:
